Dear gentleman. You have worked so hard. Now sit down and help us style you for the winter. See, few fashion bloggers talk about men’s fashion, especially during winter. And, can we talk about your lady not carrying her coat to dinner, only for you to give her yours and shiver all night long? To be fair, it’s not okay. Men should look just as stylish, in winter, as women.

Thanks to Angelino Napoleon Patterned Coats, we have discovered that men can actually look stylish in coats.

But first, let’s see some of the different types of coats for men.

Some types of Coats for Men

  • Coat

These are the oldest fashion coat type of formal wear. They are closed with either loop fasteners, buttons, hooks or zippers. They may come with collars and shoulder straps, and are worn in the winter and fall months.

  • Blazer

Resembling a suit jacket, the blazer is worn casually and is made of heavier woven fabrics. They often come in one colour. Wearing a blazer gives your audience a snippet of your character type, so pick yours carefully. The blazer is more flexible to style– you can wear yours with a smart-casual trouser or jeans, a shirt and with or without a tie. Some even wear their blazers with a t-shirt.

  • Tuxedo

These are mostly worn in formal occasions like weddings, ballroom parties and formal dinners. Coming in different styles, patterns and designs, when worn for the right occasion, you will rest assured as the smartest man in the room.

  • Single-breasted overcoat

This is easiest to wear given its simplicity. It is suitable for all heights and body shapes unlike the tuxedo.

  • Trench coat

The trench is super light and is best for autumn. It was traditionally made in the colour beige. Trench coat designs features double-breasted clasps, triangular edge, chin strap, shoulder straps and overlaps.

  • Parker coat

Also known as anorak, the Parka coat is a hooded coat with faux far. Though traditionally it was made from caribou print or leather, now, it’s made synthetically. To maintain structure, the coat is sometimes oiled with natural fish oil.

You now have a rough idea that there are different types of men’s coats. Let’s see how you can style yours.

How to Wear a Long Coat

The coat is versatile as it’s an easy piece to layer clothes with. So if you want to wear your coat for a casual look without losing your manliness; or if you want to look dapper formal, just layer on a nice coat, with these men’s coat styling tips:

  • Forget the black and embrace other colours like brown, tan, beige or even grey. An overcoat is meant to help you stand out in a crowd, so why not make a statement with fresh colours? Black just isn’t.
  • Always go for knee-length coats. If you are short, wear a coat reaching the knee or slightly shorter. If you are tall, wear a coat reaching the knee or slightly longer.
  • Go for coats made of natural materials or fibre. Natural fibres like wool, cashmere or alpaca are often used in making coats but more manufacturers are blending natural with synthetic fibres, maybe to increase profit margins and what not. If you are looking for value for your money, buy coats made of natural fibre.
  • Given the timeless classic nature of long coats, wear a hat to complement the look. If you want a more casual look, pair your coat with a flat cap. If it’s a more formal look you are after, wear a fedora or homburg hat.
  • Another thing. Accessorize your coat with scarves and gloves for a manly and safe winter look.
