The word ‘kaftan’ was first coined in 600 BC in Persia. Originally, Middle Eastern men would wear silk or cotton kaftans that had buttons at the front. It was introduced to Morocco in the 16th century, when Jews and Muslims were emigrating from Andalusia.
It was worn as a symbol of rich status– for instance, one would know an Ottoman Sultan just by looking at their kaftan. If you want to know how those regal kaftans looked, there is a display of them at Topkapi Palace, Istanbul.
Though popular in many world regions, the kaftan is an everyday wear in Morocco. The kind of event one is attending determines the kind of kaftan fabric to wear.
