Karanikolov refurbishes Attic apartment with Retro furniture

Architect Dimitar Karanikolov and interior designer Veneta Nikolova renovated and reconstructed their new home in Sofia, Bulgaria, after spending several years living in London, and the result is a modern masterpiece.

The house was originally a small, newly built attic apartment before it underwent massive refurbishing for two years and finished in 2015.

The features of the new design are breathtaking and full of modernist style furniture and components. However, the original plan of the attic apartment is retained, and as such, we can see special spaces in this home that only an attic apartment can create.

For one, the cube (which consists of 16mm concrete panels that span inside the wall and extend into the upper floor) holds the attic, which has a secret room just above the elevator shaft.

The room serves as the guest bedroom and also bathing space; before you say anything, at 4.5m, it has enough room to be a dual function upper-level space.

In the kitchen, Karanikolov and Nikolova have replaced whatever previous furniture that existed there with wooden cabinets and shelves. The woodwork table in the kitchen has a couple of functions: holding the sink, storage space below to hold crates and other utility items in the kitchen, and central eating location

The suspended ceiling light brightens the space and gives it a modernist look.

Nikolova has given the interior a multi-personality through his mix of contemporary style and vintage design features. Some of the walls are finished with brick design to provide the interior with a country mood and also with lacquered timber design and striking mono colors that are a staple of modern designs. The wardrobe looks like a retro, old suitcase and functions as a link to the attic level as much as it is storage for personal belongings.

The air conditioner in the interior is well-hidden in a bespoke wooden drawer that blends with the contemporary and retro design.

Suspended timber floors are seen all around the new apartment with a dining set, and barstool also made with matching timber furniture

Finally, like all modern apartments, this one follows the trend with sustainable components. The tall cantilevered aluminum planters are used for a vertical gardening system around the terrace and give the house a natural and refreshing feel about it.
