You are forgiven to think interior design is similar to interior decoration. These two are different because of one simple factor: Education. Anyone can be an interior decorator — throw a pillow here; mix-and-match fabric there; put a standing lampshade at a corner and boom! You have decorated a room, which is fine. The real interior design, however, takes years to master — at an institution of higher learning. This is how Mai Elhossiny and Tamer Al nazer rose to be the masterminds behind this elegantly designed house.

What Guiding Elements were Used in the Interior Design of this Dream Home?

Any professional interior designer has to have the 5 elements of interior design in mind before gaining their next commission. Without the elements, the interior of this house would be a huge void of waste.

Let’s see how these elements were incorporated in bringing the indoors of this luxurious residence to life.

Space

Space is the foundation of any design. Negative space is one without objects — including the space between objects; while positive space is one with objects. There has to be a balance of the two, depending on the functional and design outcome desired by a client.

A look at this living room, for instance, shows the intelligence use of space from the ground up.

The grey rag makes a perfect blend with the wooden floor, providing a blueprint of how other objects will fall into place. Notice how the rag doesn’t cover the entire floor?

See how the moss green sofa sits on the full length of the rag, leaving a generous negative space from the windows? The grey, brown and golden hues expose an extravagant, with a minimalist touch personality.

The console table behind the couch is as decorative as it is functional in feeding one’s need to read. One needs not have a plain shelf to hold books, as shown by Mai Elhossiny and Tamer Al naser.

Lines

Vertical, Horizontal and dynamic lines bring shape to a room while guiding the eye. In this dining room, you will notice the perfect balance between the horizontal line of the dining table and the dynamic lines of the chairs, mirror and lighting. Interior designers accentuate horizontal lines of a room to add stability and formality to it.

Notice how the interior designers have highlighted the vertical lines of this house by blending High walls and doorways, floor-to-ceiling windows and high wall-units, in a successful attempt to evoke feelings of freedom? Tall vertical lines have an effect of giving a sense of freedom and power to the inhabitants.

Form

In interior design, form is the shape of a room and every object in the room. To create a harmonious balance to a room, forms of similar shapes were added as shown here.

Interior design tips

Light

Light, man-made or natural, is an important aspect to a space. Without it, other elements will be unable to shine to their fullest capacity. Light can be broken into task lighting (defined purpose), accent lighting (emphasising objects) and mood lighting (adding ambience).

Depending on the mood you would like to have, you can choose to either use natural light from the windows; or light up the chandelier to read a book; or the standing lamp to create an ambiance your newborn will find it easy to get some sleep.

Colour

Interior designers advise when picking the colour of a room, first think about the activities that will occur in there. Then, factor in the effect of both natural and man-made lighting on colour by day and night. Consider that light alters our perception of colour. Finally, put the size of the space into consideration. Interior designers will often incorporate lighter or brighter colours in smaller spaces to give the illusion of more space.

Darker colours, as you can see in this residence, give dimension to a larger space.
