Travel after COVID-19: get ready for your next trip

You are probably wondering how will travel after COVID-19 look like and whether there will be major changes in the way we travel. While many countries in the world are still struggling with the pandemic, others are slowly reopening their borders to welcome travelers.

There is still much uncertainty regarding travel in the post-coronavirus era, but whether you’re already packing your bags for your next trip or only dreaming about being able to travel again, here are a few tips on how to prepare for travel after COVID-19.

Do your research before you travel

With most of us still stuck at home, there’s now plenty of time to research our next travel destination. As you prepare to travel again after COVID-19, do more thorough research on the places you are planning on visiting.

Whether you are traveling far away or in your home country, it’s a good idea to check out not only general information or the history of the places you plan on visiting but also which safety measures are in place.

Many museums or landmarks may open with different schedules and restrictions in place. There may only allow a limited number of visitors at a time and they may have specific requirements. Check out the official websites of the places you intend to visit for up to date information. Maybe make a list of all the places you want to see and even book your tickets in advance.

As tourist attractions are only starting to reopen with specific rules, planning ahead will be more important than ever. Showing up to visit a museum may not be possible for the time being.

Stay informed on travel advisories after COVID-19

You may have heard that not all countries are opening their borders to tourists at the same time. Even when they will, there may still be restrictions in place as to who can enter the country. Make sure to check this type of information before booking your flight.

Always check official sources for information regarding travel advisories after COVID-19. The best places to find this kind of information are websites such as the World Health Organization, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the website of the embassy of the country you are visiting, or your country’s government website.

You may find out that some countries will be off-limits for a long time so maybe this is the perfect occasion to travel closer to home. Traveling within your country of residence will certainly be possible sooner than traveling internationally. Why not discover what your home country has to offer? You may be pleasantly surprised!

Find the best prices for flights and accommodation

While some companies may offer great deals for people willing to travel soon after the COVID-19 pandemic, others may be forced to increase prices to make up for the decreased demand. Ticket prices may become more unpredictable in the near future. However, there are ways to make sure you find the best deals.

Google Flights and Skyscanner are two of the many search engines that help you find the best flights. These two in particular offer a lot of flexibility when searching for cheap flights. If you have a specific destination in mind, on Skyscanner you can search for the cheapest month. Or if you want to travel to any destination, both search engines allow you to input your departure city and find the cheapest destinations.

When it comes to accommodation, Booking.com, Expedia, or Agoda are some of the most popular websites that offer a wide range of options. If you’re looking for a more authentic experience, Airbnb is a great place to look. On top of getting original accommodation, you can also meet locals who can give you insider tips or maybe even show you around.

Stay safe when traveling after COVID-19

You may want to review your usual travel gear and add a few extra items for safety. Masks will very likely be required on flights, trains, or any other means of transportation. You may even need to change your mask a few times during your trip so make sure you pack a few. However, airports or airlines may also make them available for you.

Stock up on alcohol-based hand sanitizer and make sure you get the travel size if you’re traveling with a carry-on. While you’ll find it in many public places, it’s useful to have some with you at all times.

Finally, social distancing will likely be in place for a while so make sure to keep your distance when you’re standing in line or entering any closed space. Traveling after COVID-19 will certainly look a lot different but with proper safety measures, it will still be doable.

Support local businesses

Finally, when you do reach your travel destination, try to be more conscious of your choices when it comes to eating out, having a coffee, or buying clothes, presents, or souvenirs. Keep in mind that many small local businesses have been heavily impacted by the pandemic. They will have a harder time than major retailers in sustaining themselves during this time of social distancing. Whenever possible, try to support these local businesses.

Traveling after Covid-19 will definitely not be the same for a while. We will need to get used to additional safety measures and social distancing. We will need to be more cautious to protect not only ourselves but the people that surround us as well. And while some of us are still only daydreaming of visiting the next destination, the time will come when we will enjoy our trips again. Until then, start planning your perfect trip!
